Tell me a story that is important or told in your family. ((This could be a story about something that happened to you or to another family member. It might be something that happened while on vacation when you were five years old, or it could be about a relative who lived more than one hundred years ago.)
minimum: 15 sentences

  1. Me Brochure:

Students should continue working on their topics. They should complete the rest of the topics today. Any topics that have been counted for bonus may be counted as part of today’s topics. The only topic students do not have to complete is the mission statement. THEY MUST TURN THIS WORK IN IF THEY WANT CREDIT.

If students finish their Me Brochure entries and they need more work to do, then assign the following:

  1. Mission Statement Handout: Students have their handouts. Have them take out two sheets of notebook paper. Label one of the sheets of notebook paper: The Person I Would Like to Become. Label the other sheet: Qualities I Value.

There are two black tubs of magazines under the white board at the front of the room. Have students pick up a couple of magazines and search for words and pictures that fit either of the labels on the notebook paper. Have them cut the words/pictures out and put them on the correct sheet of paper. At the end of class, they should fold up the cuttings in the notebook paper and put in a Zip Loc Bag labeled with the student’s name. (A box of bags and a Sharpie are on my desk.)

I only have thirteen pairs of scissors, so students will have to share with the person sitting next to them.
